A deep tissue massage is working with the deeper tissue layers of the muscles, tendons and fascia, called connective tissue.
Concentration is given to areas where tension and pain are great for the client.
The technique used is similar to a Swedish style of massage where stronger, slower and deeper strokes are used.
The theapist doesn't rush the strokes so it alows the muscles to melt into their hands relieving client pain.
Deep tissue massage can be very beneficial in releasing chronic muscle tenison.
Deep tissue massage therapy is not recommended for people who have:
- Had recent surgery
- Chemotherapy or radiation, unless doctor advised
- Contagious skin diseases or rashes
- Open wounds
- People who are prone to blood clots
- People who easily bruise
- Varicose veins
- Acute injuries such as sprains or strains
“Therapeutic massage” is a general term used to describe any type of massage modality that helps relieve pain, reduce stress, and work on a specific dysfunction of the body. It does not mean it will be a deep tissue massage; light to firm pressure is used depending on client’s desires. During therapeutic massage don’t be surprised when the whole body is not work and only specific areas are focused on. With client permission PNF stretching and dynamic cupping may be incorporated into a therapeutic massage to help release muscle and fascial tension. A therapeutic massage is recommended for anyone who experiences reoccurring or acute shoulder, neck, mid back or low back pain. Also anyone who gets regular tension headaches.
A prenatal massage is very similar to a Swedish massage. With adjustments to how the client will lay to allow more comfort.
Traditionally a prenatal client will lay on their side with pillows used to support their unsupported structures and provide them with the most comfortable position.
There are also specialty prenatal massage pillows available that can be placed on the table and allow the prenatal client to lay face down comfortably and safely.
These prenatal pillows are usually a big hit with prenatal clients and that hour of being able to get relief laying facedown is wonderful.

A relaxation massage is recommended for anyone who is seeking out massage because of anxiety, depression, stress or anyone struggling with life’s daily struggles. There generally isn’t any specific focus given to any specific body dysfunction; instead focus is given to calming over active nerves with a soothing, slow relaxing approach. Massage in general can lower cortisol and increase serotonin which boosts your body’s ability to fight off pain and feelings of sadness; while increasing blood and lymph circulation. When someone experiences a trauma the nervous system is pushed beyond its ability to self-regulate. When this occurs the body’s nervous system can become stuck on “on”. Which causes the system to become over stimulated very quickly and we can experience things like anxiety, panic, anger, hypertension and restlessness. A good relaxation massage can help to calm the nervous system and return it to a neutral state.
